"Plough It On Once again" is a song by the English rock band Genesis featured on their 1980 album Knuckles. Also released every bit a single, the song reached number 8 in the UK Singles Chart,[ii] becoming the ring's second top 10 hit. The lyrics, by Mike Rutherford,[three] business a man who does nada more than watch telly. He becomes obsessed with the people he watches on it, believing them to exist his friends.

The song is featured on the Flash FM station playlist in the game Chiliad Theft Auto: Vice Urban center Stories.

Background [edit]

"Plow Information technology On Once again" was built from leftovers from projects past each fellow member: The second ready of verses was conceived by Tony Banks for A Curious Feeling: "We kind of put [Rutherford's riff] – the bit he didn't use on Smallcreep'due south Day, curiously enough – with the bit I didn't use on A Curious Feeling, and put these ii together. We made it much more rocky; both bits became much more than rocky. My chip was a bit more epic, and Mike'due south scrap was a bit slower and a bit more heavy metal. And then Phil gave it a much more straightforward pulsate part; perhaps neither of us would have thought that nosotros would want that on that scrap [...] We put on one or two other bits, too, that ended up from in that location".[four]

The song is characterised by a rhythmic construction uncharacteristically complex for popular music but common in the band's progressive rock dorsum catalogue. The verse/chorus sections alternate fourth dimension signatures, half-dozen

Rutherford explains on the Songbook DVD: "I had this riff [plays lead riff on guitar], simply at the fourth dimension I was playing information technology similar this: [plays slower]. And Phil said, 'Why don't you try it in a faster speed?' and then he said to me, 'Do y'all realize it is in 13

?' and I said, 'What practise y'all mean, it'south in xiii? It's in four

, isn't it?' 'No, it's 13.'"

Collins confirms: "You tin can't dance to it. You come across people trying to dance to it every now and again. They get on the off vanquish but they don't know why".[5] Tony Banks adds: "You tin can't dance or clap along to it because of that time signature. When we play it live, y'all can always run into the audition getting caught out."[6]

"Turn Information technology On Again" has been a favourite at Genesis's shows. Consequently, the group's 1999 compilation Plow Information technology On Over again: The Hits and its 2007 expanded reissue, subtitled The Tour Edition, were named afterward it, equally was the band'due south 2007 Turn It On Once again: The Tour reunion tour. In the 1980s, the band would attach a medley of 1960s pop songs (referred to by the band as the "Blues Brothers" medley, as the outset vocal was "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love"). The vocal would be returned to its anthology course for the We Tin't Dance bout and the band would later regard the medley equally a poor conclusion.[ commendation needed ] Peter Gabriel played drums when he reunited with his old bandmates at 1982's Six of the Best bear witness and institute himself baffled by its time signatures. "It was typical Peter: 'Oh, I can play this'," observed Tony Banks. "Simply once he started playing, he kept looking around going, Oh fuck! 'Turn Information technology On Again' does funny things – information technology's truly a Genesis song."[half dozen]

Originally written and recorded in the primal of B Major, it was transposed downwards to A for the 2007 tour and further downward to 1000 for the 2021 bout to recoup for the lowering of Collins' voice.

The Duke Suite [edit]

"Turn it on Once more" was originally a section of a long suite written past the ring that was separate up into individual songs before information technology was released. At the time, was just an interlude between the preceding and next sections of the suite.

Chart performance [edit]

"Turn It on Again" was a moderate hit in North America, but failed to attain the Tiptop 40 except in regional markets such as Chicago (#31 on WLS-AM).[7] However, it was a bigger striking in Europe, particularly in the UK where it reached #8.[8]
